Jabez meaning
Jabez is a Christian boy's name of Hebrew origin.
Sorrowful; from a root probably meaning to grieve
Also used to mean: pain
Jabez is the Hebrew Ya'bets. Strong's Concordance (H3258) derives it from a root probably meaning "to grieve" and glosses it "sorrowful", which matches the story in 1 Chronicles 4:9, where his mother names him Jabez because she bore him in pain. The same verse calls him more honourable than his brothers, and the next records his short prayer that God would bless him, widen his borders and keep him from harm, "and God granted him that which he requested". Because of that prayer the name is used in Protestant families, including in South India.
