Aariz (عارض) is the Arabic ʿāriḍ, from the root ʿ-r-ḍ; Urdu speakers say the final letter as z. Lane's main senses are a bank of clouds spreading across the horizon, and the side of the face, or cheek. The cloud sense appears in the Quran at 46:24, where the people of ʿĀd see a cloud approaching their valleys and take it for rain, though it brings a destructive wind. On name lists today Aariz is usually given as "respectable" or "intelligent". Those are the meanings families use now; the word ʿāriḍ itself does not carry them. The nearest dictionary sense belongs to the related feminine ʿāriḍa, which Lane glosses as power or eloquence of speech and good judgement.
