Aarav (आरव) comes from Sanskrit ārava, formed from ā- and rava, "sound". Monier-Williams records ārava as a cry, a crash or a thundering sound, and rava as any sound at all, from a lion's roar to birdsong and the humming of bees. On Indian baby-name lists today Aarav is usually given as "peaceful" or "calm". We could not find that sense in the Sanskrit dictionaries, so it appears to be a modern meaning that has grown up around the name rather than the word's original sense. The name is short, easy to spell in Indian and English scripts, and sounds the same in most Indian languages.
