Zion is the hill in Jerusalem where King David took a Canaanite stronghold, and in the Bible the name comes to stand for Jerusalem itself and for God's dwelling among his people. In Hebrew it is Tsiyyon. Strong's treats it as the same word as tsiyun, 'a monumental or guiding pillar', a signpost, while the NAS concordance links it with tsiyyah, 'dry land'; Brown-Driver-Briggs gives no settled origin. Baby-name lists usually give 'highest point' or 'fortress', which describe the hill rather than translate the word. Zion is also important in Rastafari and in Black American spirituals. It is said ZY-un.
