Milo is an ancient name. Lewis & Short record it for Milo of Croton, the famous Greek wrestler of the sixth century BCE, and for Titus Annius Milo, a Roman politician who took the name in admiration of the athlete and whom Cicero defended in a surviving speech; the dictionary gives no meaning for it. In the Middle Ages Milo was also a Continental name that gave English Miles. Baby-name lists offer 'soldier' or 'merciful', but those meanings are borrowed guesses rather than a recorded sense. Milo is said MY-loh, a light, friendly sound that pairs easily with Indian surnames.
