Riaan (रियान) has two separate lives. In South Africa it is an Afrikaans short form of Adriaan, which the Meertens Institute's Dutch first-name bank traces to Latin Adrianus, "from Adria", a town near Venice. In India it is a modern boy's name, also spelled Riyan or Riyaan, that name lists give as "little king", the meaning they also give the Irish Rian, the root of Ryan, though Irish surname scholars call Rian's original meaning unknown. We found no Sanskrit word behind the Indian use. Actors Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D'Souza chose Riaan for their elder son in 2014.
