Sania is usually written ثانیہ in Urdu, which is Arabic thāniya, the feminine of thānin. Lane's lexicon gives thānin as 'second', the ordinal of two, and also as 'one who bends or doubles something'. Baby-name lists, however, give Sania as 'brilliant', 'radiant' or 'exalted'. Those meanings belong to a different Arabic word, saniyya, from sanā, 'light, brightness', and saniyy, 'high, exalted', both also in Lane. In Urdu speech the two sound almost the same, so the meanings are easily merged. The best-known bearer is the tennis player Sania Mirza, whose name is written ثانیہ.
