Shoaib (شعیب), also spelled Shuaib or Shoeb, is the name of the prophet whom the Quran says was sent to his own people, the people of Madyan (Midian), calling them to worship God and to give full measure and weight (7:85). Muslim tradition often identifies him with Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, though the Quran does not say so. In form the name is a diminutive of shaʿb, which Lane defines as a great tribe, a branch of a people's lineage, so it could be read as "little tribe"; Lane does not discuss the name itself. Name lists give Shoaib as "one who shows the right path", which describes the prophet's role rather than the word.
