Sophie meaning
Sophie is an international and Christian girl's name of Greek origin (via French).
Wisdom; French form of Sophia, from Greek sophia
Sophie is the French form of Sophia, from Greek sophia, "wisdom". The Online Etymology Dictionary explains sophia as skill, sound judgement and learning, from sophos, "wise", and notes that "Saint Sophia" in the names of eastern churches, as in Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, means holy or divine wisdom rather than a person. The New Testament uses sophia for wisdom 51 times (Strong's G4678), and St Sophia is honoured in both Eastern and Western churches. It is said SOH-fee, and its meaning is the same as Indian names such as Pragya and Medha.
