Sofia is the Greek word sophia, 'wisdom'. Strong's Concordance lists it as G4678, defining it as wisdom, higher or lower, worldly or spiritual, and the word appears around fifty times in the Greek New Testament, as in Luke 2:52, which says that the young Jesus grew in wisdom. As a name it is used across Europe and the wider Christian world in forms such as Sophia, Sofia and Sophie. In India it is chosen by Christian families and, as an international name, by Muslim families too, although it has no Arabic root. Baby-name lists give 'wisdom', exactly the Greek sense.
