Asifa (آصفہ) is the feminine of Asif. In Urdu the name is spelled with the letters of Āṣaf, the sage whom Muslim and Persian tradition remembers as King Solomon's chief minister. Steingass' Persian dictionary records him and notes that his name became proverbial for a wise counsellor. Name lists often give Asifa as "storm", but that is a different Arabic word, ʿāṣifa, "a violent wind", which the Quran uses for a storm at sea (10:22) and which is spelled differently. Both readings circulate in India, so the spelling a family chooses shows which meaning it intends.
