Aqeela (عقیلہ) is Arabic ʿaqīla, from the root ʿ-q-l. Lane's lexicon gives its main sense as a woman of noble family who is modest and kept in seclusion, and extends it to the choicest of anything: the best camel, the chief of a people, a large clear pearl. On name lists Aqeela is usually "wise" or "intelligent". That sense belongs to related words from the same root, ʿaql, "intellect", and ʿāqil, "intelligent", rather than to ʿaqīla itself. The masculine Aqeel is also used in India.
