Adorning the world
Also used to mean: ornament of the world
Jahanara (جہاں آرا) is Persian jahān-ārā, made from jahān, "the world", and ārā, "adorning". Steingass' dictionary defines it as "world-adorning" and notes that it was also the name of a month in the old Persian calendar. The name is closely tied to Jahanara Begum, the eldest daughter of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, who became the first lady of the Mughal court, wrote on Sufi saints and planned Delhi's Chandni Chowk. Name lists give "adorning the world". It is used by Muslim families in India and Bangladesh.
