Mumtaz meaning
Mumtaz (ممتاز) is a Muslim unisex name of Arabic origin (Urdu usage), used for both girls and boys.
Set apart, distinguished, select, eminent
Mumtaz (ممتاز) is the Arabic mumtāz, "set apart", from the root m-y-z. Lane's lexicon explains imtāza as being set apart or separated from others, and Platts's Urdu dictionary defines mumtāz as chosen out from others, distinguished, select or eminent. The name is forever linked with Mumtaz Mahal, "the distinguished one of the palace", the title of Arjumand Banu Begum, wife of Shah Jahan, in whose memory the Taj Mahal was built. Name lists give Mumtaz as "distinguished" or "excellent". In India it is given to both girls and boys.
