Sophia meaning
Sophia is a Christian and international girl's name of Greek origin.
Wisdom; from Greek sophia
Sophia is the Greek word sophia, "wisdom". Strong's Concordance, which lists it as a New Testament word, gives it as wisdom of every kind, "higher or lower, worldly or spiritual", from sophos, wise. In Christian thought wisdom came to be seen as an attribute of God and of Christ, and the great church of Hagia Sophia, "Holy Wisdom", built in Constantinople in the sixth century under the emperor Justinian, takes its name from it. As a personal name Sophia is not found in the Bible, but it has long been used by Christians, and it gives the forms Sofia and Sophie. Name lists give "wisdom", as in the Greek. In India it is used in Christian families.
