Titus was a Roman first name, borne by the general, later emperor, who captured Jerusalem in AD 70. Strong's Concordance calls it 'of Latin origin but uncertain significance', and gives no meaning. Name lists often say 'title of honour', linking it to Latin titulus, but that is a modern guess. In the New Testament Titus is a Greek convert whom Paul trusted with difficult missions to Corinth and left in charge of the churches of Crete; the Letter to Titus is addressed to him. In India Titus is used in Christian families.
