Altamash (التمش) is the form in which generations of Indian historians read the name of Shams al-Dīn Iltutmish, the Turkic slave-soldier who became Sultan of Delhi in 1211 and ruled until 1236. Written Persian leaves out most vowels, so the name was also read Altamish or Altamsh. It is not an Arabic or Persian word and does not appear in Steingass or Platts. A 1932 note in the Bulletin of the School of Oriental Studies explains the Turkic original as roughly "one who has seized and holds the country". Some name sites give "golden light", which we could not confirm.
