Alvin meaning
Alvin is a Christian boy's name of Old English origin.
Elf-friend, from Old English ælf 'elf' and wine 'friend'
Also used to mean: noble friend
Alvin goes back to the Old English name Ælfwine, from ælf, 'elf', and wine, 'friend'. In Old English poetry wine is a warm word, used of a protector, a lord or a beloved. Other Old English names such as Æthelwine, 'noble friend', fell together with Ælfwine in later English as Alwin and Alwyn, which is why many name lists give the meaning as 'noble friend'. In India the name is used by Christian families in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Mangalore, where it is also spelt Alwyn.
