Atreya (आत्रेय) is the Sanskrit ātreya, "descendant of Atri", from Atri, one of the seven great sages of the Vedic tradition and the seer of many Ṛg-veda hymns. Monier-Williams gives it as a descendant of Atri, cites the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa, lists it as the name of a physician, and records it as a name of Śiva. Ātreya Punarvasu is remembered as the teacher of medicine in the Caraka Saṃhitā, and Dattātreya, "Datta the son of Atri", is a widely worshipped deity. Ātreya is also a gotra name. Name lists give Atreya as "descendant of Atri", matching the dictionary.
