August meaning
August is an international boy's name of Latin origin.
Venerable, majestic, worthy of honour
Also used to mean: great
August comes from the Latin adjective augustus, which Lewis & Short define as consecrated, venerable and majestic, a word that first belonged to the language of religion and is usually linked to augeo, "to increase". In 27 BCE the Roman senate gave the title Augustus to Octavian, the first emperor, and the month Sextilis was renamed August in his honour; English still uses august for anything grand and dignified. As a first name it has a classic, slightly old-world feel. Indian families may also like that August is the month of Independence Day.
