Austin meaning
Austin is an international and Christian boy's name of English origin (from Latin).
Medieval English form of Augustine, from augustus, "venerable"
Also used to mean: great, magnificent
Austin is the medieval English form of Augustine. The Online Etymology Dictionary traces it to Old French Aousten, a shortened Augustinus, which is built on Latin augustus, "venerable, majestic". Around 1200 the poet Layamon already called Saint Augustine of Canterbury "Austin", and the form lived on as an English surname, also spelled Austen, before returning as a first name. For Indian Christian families it keeps the link with the great saints named Augustine, of Hippo and of Canterbury, while sounding short and modern.
