Dhyey (ध्येय) comes from the Sanskrit dhyeya, a form of the verb dhyai, "to contemplate", the same root as dhyāna, "meditation". Monier-Williams and Apte both give dhyeya as "to be meditated on" or "fit for contemplation": the thing one fixes the mind on. Indian name lists give Dhyey as "aim", "goal" or "purpose", which is how the word is used today in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati. The two senses are close, since a goal is what one keeps the mind fixed on, but the "goal" sense is a later development rather than the classical one. The name is used in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
