Eloise meaning
Eloise is an international girl's name of Germanic origin (via Old French).
Probably from Germanic Helewidis: heil 'healthy, whole' + wid 'wide'
Eloise is the English form of the French Héloïse, which probably comes from the old Germanic name Helewidis. Its first part matches Old English hál, which Bosworth-Toller's dictionary gives as whole, hale and in good health, related to our words whole and hale; its second part is usually read as "wide", like Old English wíd, though some scholars prefer "wood". The name's fame comes from Héloïse, the brilliant twelfth-century French scholar and abbess whose love letters with the philosopher Peter Abelard are still read today. Children know Eloise from Kay Thompson's books about a girl who lives at the Plaza Hotel.
