Huzaifa (حذیفہ) is the Arabic name Ḥudhayfa, pronounced with a z in Urdu. It is loved above all for Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman, the Companion known as the keeper of the Prophet's secrets. Lane's lexicon does not explain the name. Its root, ḥ-dh-f, means to cut or clip, and gives ḥadhaf, a breed of small black sheep from the Hijaz, and some scholars take Ḥudhayfa as a little form of that word. Indian name lists give "little lion" or "brave"; we found no dictionary support for those meanings. The name is used by Muslim families in India and Pakistan.
