Idris (ادریس) is the name of a prophet whom the Quran praises as truthful and a prophet (19:56) and names among the patient (21:85). Muslim tradition commonly identifies him with Enoch of the Bible, and many English translations of the Quran render the name that way. Name lists often say Idris means "studious" or "interpreter", linking it with the Arabic root d-r-s, "to read or study", which Lane explains as reading a book over and over until it is easy to remember. Lane's entry for the root does not mention the prophet, and the origin of the name is uncertain, so "studious" is best taken as a traditional association. The name was borne by the founder of the Idrisid dynasty of Morocco.
