Laiba (لائبہ) is usually read as Arabic lāʾiba, the feminine of lāʾib. Lane's Lexicon glosses lāʾib as thirsting, from lāba, "to thirst" or to circle around water without reaching it, and records lawāʾib as the plural of lāʾiba. On name lists Laiba is widely given as "angel of paradise" or "beautiful". These are the meanings many families use today, but they are not found in the dictionaries. Islamic scholars who have answered questions about the name, at Darul Uloom Deoband and the UK site Islamic Portal, also give "thirsty" for لائبہ and found no dictionary support for the heavenly sense. The similar spelling لاعبہ is a different word, "a female player".
