Lazarus meaning
Lazarus is a Christian boy's name of Hebrew origin (via Greek).
God (is) helper; Greek form of Eleazar
Also used to mean: God has helped
Lazarus is the Greek Lazaros, a shortened form of the Hebrew Elazar (Eleazar). Strong's Concordance builds Elazar from El, "God", and azar, "to help", and explains it as "God is helper" (H499, G2976). Two men bear the name in the Gospels: Lazarus of Bethany, brother of Martha and Mary, whom Jesus raised from the tomb after four days (John 11), and the poor beggar Lazarus in the parable of the rich man (Luke 16). In Tamil Nadu and Kerala the name is used in Christian families, often in the shorter form Lazar.
