Louis meaning
Louis is an international and Christian boy's name of Germanic origin (French form).
Famous in war: Germanic hluda-, "famous", and wiga, "war"
Also used to mean: famous warrior
Louis is the French form of an old Frankish name. The Online Etymology Dictionary traces it through Old French Loois and Latin Ludovicus to Old High German Hluodowig, made of hluda-, 'heard of, famous', and wiga, 'war', so roughly 'famous in battle'. The same name gave German Ludwig and the Frankish king Clovis. French kings carried it from the ninth century to the nineteenth, among them St Louis IX and the Sun King, Louis XIV; later bearers include Louis Pasteur and Louis Armstrong. Baby-name lists give 'famous warrior', which matches. In Britain it is said LOO-ee; Americans often say LOO-iss.
