Raymond meaning
Raymond is a Christian boy's name of Germanic origin (via French).
Counsel + protection (Germanic ragin, mund)
Also used to mean: wise protector, counsellor
Raymond comes from the old Germanic name Raginmund, carried into France and then England by the Normans. Its first part is ragin, which Köbler's Gothic dictionary glosses 'counsel, decision'; its second is mund, which his Old High German dictionary glosses 'protection, guardianship'. Put together, name lists give it as 'wise protector'. The name spread through the Catholic world with saints such as Raymond of Peñafort, the thirteenth-century Dominican lawyer, and Raymond Nonnatus, patron of mothers in childbirth. In India Raymond is used in Christian families.
