Lucca is usually a spelling of Luca, the Italian form of Luke. It goes back to Greek Loukas, the name of the Gospel writer, which Strong's Concordance explains as a shortened form of the Latin name Lucanus, and Lewis & Short give Lucanus as "of Lucania", a region of southern Italy. The double c is the spelling of Lucca, the walled city in Tuscany, called Luca in Latin, where the Romans founded a colony in about 180 BC. Name lists often give "light", by association with Latin lux; that is a popular reading, not the recorded origin. It is said LOO-kuh.
