Madhumita (मधुमिता) is a girls' name used in Bengal and Odisha and across India. Its first part is Sanskrit madhu, which Monier-Williams gives as sweet, pleasant and charming, and as a noun honey. Name lists explain the whole name as "sweet friend", reading the second part as mitā. We could not confirm that: in Sanskrit mita means "measured" and the word for friend is mitra, and the full form madhumitā is not in the dictionaries. So we give "sweet friend" as the popular meaning, with madhu, "sweet", as the sourced root. Madhumitha is the South Indian spelling.
