Source: Lane, An Arabic–English Lexicon (1863–93), Book I, p. 2698 · entry madīḥ, midḥa (مَدِيحٌ، مِدْحَةٌ), root m-d-ḥ · See the entry · checked 25 Oct 2026
Madiha (مدیحہ) comes from the Arabic root m-d-ḥ, "to praise". Lane's lexicon gives madīḥ, with midḥa, as praise, eulogy or commendation, especially poetry composed in someone's honour, and lists mamādiḥ as praiseworthy qualities; in Urdu a madīḥa is a poem of praise. Name lists usually give Madiha as "praiseworthy" or "commendable". That sense belongs more to the related word mamdūḥ, "praised", so it is best seen as the popular meaning that has grown around the name. Madiha is used by Muslim families in India and Pakistan.
