Bahija (بہیجہ) is the feminine of Arabic bahīj, from the root b-h-j. Lane's lexicon gives bahīj as beautiful, or beautiful and bright, and says that of a person it describes a laughing, happy look; the shorter bahij means joyful or glad, and bahja is beauty and brightness. The Quran says the rain-revived earth puts forth "every beautiful kind" of plant, min kulli zawjin bahīj (22:5). Name lists give Bahija as "joyful", "happy" or "beautiful", all close to the dictionary.
