Mugilan (முகிலன்) is a modern Tamil boys' name formed from mukil, a cloud, with the masculine ending -aṉ, in the same way as Nilavan from nilavu, the moon. The Tamil Lexicon of the University of Madras gives mukil as a cloud and a gathered mass, and links it with related words in Telugu and Kannada. It is a native Tamil word, distinct from Sanskrit megha, which has the same meaning. The Lexicon also has a headword spelt the same way, mukilaṉ, but that is a separate word meaning a Mughal, from Arabic, and has nothing to do with the name. Mugilan is used for boys, while Mugil itself is given to both boys and girls.
