Kathiravan (கதிரவன்) is a Tamil word for the sun, built on katir, a ray of light, with a masculine ending. The Tamil Lexicon defines katiravaṉ as the sun, as the one that emits rays, and quotes the first verse of the Tiruppaḷḷiyeḻucci, a Vaishnava dawn hymn that opens with the sun reaching the eastern peak. Its root katir also gives the shorter name Kathir. Unlike Sanskrit sun names such as Surya or Aditya, Kathiravan is pure Tamil, which appeals to parents looking for a Tamil name.
