Ezhilan (எழிலன்) is formed from Tamil eḻil with the masculine ending -aṉ. The Tamil Lexicon gives eḻil a rich set of senses: loveliness and grace, youthfulness, an impressive bearing, height, bulk and strength, quoting the Paripāṭal, the Tirukkural and the Puṟanāṉūṟu. So Ezhilan is "the handsome one", with a sense of youthful, upright grace, matching the "handsome" or "beautiful" of name lists. It is a modern pure-Tamil name, and the root also appears in Ezhil, Ezhilarasan and Ezhilarasi.
