Kavin (கவின்) is the Tamil word kaviṉ, beauty. The Tamil Lexicon glosses it with aḻaku, the everyday word for beauty, and renders it beauty, grace, fairness and comeliness. Its citation comes from the Sangam anthology Aiṅkuṟunūṟu, where a bright forehead is praised for its kaviṉ, so the word belongs to the oldest layer of Tamil poetry. The Lexicon suggests, with a cautious 'probably', that it is related to the verb kavi-. As a name Kavin has a classical meaning but a short, modern sound, and it is used mostly for boys, though the meaning suits either. Some name lists give 'poet', but the Lexicon's sense for kaviṉ is beauty.
