Vetrivel (வெற்றிவேல்) means 'spear of victory'. It joins veṟṟi, which the Tamil Lexicon gives as victory, success and triumph, from the verb vel-, to win, with vēl, Murugan's spear. 'Vetrivel Murugan', 'Murugan of the victorious spear', is one of the commonest cries of his devotees, heard at festivals such as Thaipusam, and the vel is said to have won the god's battle against the demon Surapadman. The name is used for Tamil boys, alongside Thangavel, Sakthivel and Vadivel.
