Navneet (ਨਵਨੀਤ, नवनीत) comes from Sanskrit navanīta, freshly churned butter, and the Mahan Kosh of Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha gives the same sense for the Punjabi word, with the everyday synonym naiṇū. Butter has warm associations in Hindu devotion through the child Krishna, remembered for stealing it from the cowherd homes of Gokul. On Sikh name lists, however, Navneet is usually explained as "ever new". Neither Monier-Williams nor the Mahan Kosh supports that reading, so it appears to be a modern meaning that has grown up around the name rather than the word's original sense. A full-word search found no occurrence in the Guru Granth Sahib. The name is used for both boys and girls, in Sikh and Hindu families alike.
