Navjot meaning
Navjot (ਨਵਜੋਤ) is a Sikh unisex name of Punjabi origin, used for both girls and boys.
New (nav) light (jot)
Navjot (ਨਵਜੋਤ) joins nav, "new", and jot, "light". Nav is Sanskrit nava, which also means nine, and the Guru Granth Sahib uses it for "new" at Ang 844; the Mahan Kosh of Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha records the same sense. Jot is light, and in Gurbani it often stands for the divine light present in every being, as at Ang 13. Together the name reads "new light", and name lists give the same meaning. Like many Sikh names it is a modern compound rather than a phrase from scripture, and it is given to both boys and girls, followed by Singh or Kaur. The former Test cricketer and Punjab politician Navjot Singh Sidhu is a well-known bearer.
