Simar (ਸਿਮਰ) is the stem of the Punjabi verb simarnā, to remember, from which simran comes. The Mahan Kosh explains simran, Sanskrit smaraṇa, as remembering the Name and qualities of the beloved with a one-pointed mind. The call ਸਿਮਰਿ, "remember", runs all through the Guru Granth Sahib, and the Sukhmani opens with the words "I remember, and remembering, remembering, find peace" (Ang 262). As a name Simar is a shorter companion of Simran, and name lists give it as remembrance or meditation. It is used mostly for girls.
