Dark blue; name of a goddess, a musical rāgiṇī and a river
Also used to mean: sapphire
Neela (नीला) is the feminine of Sanskrit nīla, a word for dark colours, especially deep blue, dark green and black. Monier-Williams lists nīlā as the indigo plant, as the name of a goddess and of a river, and, in music, as a rāgiṇī personified as the wife of the rāga Mallāra. Name lists give Neela as "blue" or "sapphire". It is related to the boys' name Neel and to Neelima, "blueness". Neela is a different name from the Tamil Nila, which means "moon".
