Nimit (निमित) matches Sanskrit nimita, which Monier-Williams records in two senses: "measured" or "caused", and "fixed, raised, erected", the second going back to the Rigveda. Name lists usually give Nimit as "destined", "sign" or "omen". Those senses belong to the neighbouring word nimitta, a sign or omen and also a cause, as in the Bhagavad Gita's call to Arjuna to be "merely the instrument" (nimitta-mātra). The two words are easily blended, so the popular meaning is close in sound but comes from a different word.
