Vrushali (वृषाली) is a modern Marathi name with a literary origin. In the Mahabharata, Karna's wives are not named; the epic says only that they came from the charioteer community. The name Vrushali comes from Shivaji Sawant's celebrated Marathi novel Mrityunjay, where she is Karna's childhood companion and first wife, and it was taken up again in Ranjit Desai's novel Radheya. The scholar Pradip Bhattacharya has suggested that Sawant coined the name. We found no entry for vṛṣālī in the Sanskrit dictionaries, so the name's meaning is best given as its story. It is used mainly in Marathi families.
