Ami meaning
Ami (अमी) is a Hindu girl's name of Hindi origin (Gujarati usage, from Sanskrit amṛta). By its first sound, अ, it is a Mesh rashi name (Krittika nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
The water of life, nectar; water, rain
Ami (अमी) is the Hindi and Gujarati form of Sanskrit amṛta, "nectar of immortality". Platts' Hindustani dictionary gives amī as the water of life or nectar, and also as water or rain, and traces it to amṛta. The Sanskrit word was worn down over centuries of everyday speech, which is how amṛta became amī and amiyā. Name lists give "nectar", in line with the dictionary. Ami is above all a Gujarati girls' name. Elsewhere, Ami is also a Hebrew and a Japanese name, and the French word for "friend", all unrelated.
