Ariana is a form of Ariadne, through the Italian Arianna. In Greek myth Ariadne was the daughter of King Minos of Crete; Homer's lexicons recall that she gave Theseus the clue of thread that led him out of the Labyrinth, and that her dancing-floor at Knossos was famous. Name lists translate Ariana as "most holy" or "very pure", by splitting Ariadne into ari-, "very", and adnos, said to be a Cretan word for "holy". The French Greek dictionary of Bailly, however, treats the name as older than Greek, so that reading is uncertain. The singer Ariana Grande is its best-known bearer today.
