Asmita (अस्मिता) is built on asmi, "I am". Monier-Williams defines Sanskrit asmitā as egoism, and in Patañjali's Yoga Sūtras it is the sense of "I-am-ness", one of five kleśas, or afflictions, to be overcome. Modern Hindi has given the word a warmer sense: asmitā is now the usual word for identity, dignity and self-respect, as in national or cultural asmitā. Name lists follow this modern meaning and give "pride", "self-respect" or "identity". The name is used across India and is often spelled Ashmita.
