Avadhoot meaning
Avadhoot (अवधूत) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, अ, it is a Mesh rashi name (Krittika nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
One who has shaken off worldly ties, a sage who knows Brahman
Also used to mean: liberated soul, ascetic, Lord Dattatreya
Avadhoot (अवधूत) is Sanskrit avadhūta, from the verb dhū, "to shake", with ava-, "off". Its literal senses in Monier-Williams are shaken off, removed and discarded; said of a person, it means one who has shaken off all worldly feeling and obligation, a sage who knows Brahman. In devotional tradition the avadhūta is the free, liberated saint, and the Avadhūta Gītā is attributed to Dattātreya, which is why the name is closely linked with the worship of Dattātreya. The Marathi singer and composer Avadhoot Gupte is a well-known bearer.
