Dasharath meaning
Dasharath (दशरथ) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin.
Having ten chariots; the father of Rama, king of Ayodhya
Also used to mean: king of ten chariots
Dasharath (दशरथ) is the Sanskrit daśa-ratha, from daśa, "ten", and ratha, "chariot". Monier-Williams records the adjective "having ten chariots" in the Rigveda, and then the name of Rāma's father, the king of Ayodhyā of the line of Ikṣvāku, along with several other kings. Through the Ramayana the name is known in every Indian home: Dasharatha's promise to Kaikeyī sends Rāma into exile. Retellings explain the name by saying his chariot could ride in all ten directions. In modern India the name is also remembered through Dashrath Manjhi, the Bihar labourer who cut a road through a hill by hand.
