Ahan (अहान) is linked to Sanskrit ahan, one of the stems of the old word ahar, "day". Monier-Williams records ahar from the Rigveda onward as a day, a festival or sacrificial day, and the day personified as one of the eight Vasus; the dual ahanī means day and night together. On Indian baby-name lists Ahan is usually explained as "dawn" or "daybreak". The dictionary gives "day" rather than "dawn", so the popular sense is a close modern reading of the word. In Persian a similar-sounding but unrelated word, āhan, means iron or a sword, which some Muslim families may have in mind. Ahan is a short, modern name given to boys.
